Instant Kafé was a further development of the concept “Talkaoke”, where the meeting between people was staged as a TV show, and promoted open and honest discussion among people who hadn’t met before. During Instant Kafé, at the central library in Aarhus, Denmark, it was possible for interested people to participate in a discussion with people they had never met before. The participants determined what was discussed. The event was inspired by 1700s coffee houses. Back then, coffee had just reached Europe, and brought people together in the cafés, where many public discussions toke place. Revolution was in the air, and topics such as publicity, democracy, freedom of the press, and new media were discussed extensively among the guests, and no one had time to worry about the many words that flew about the room. It has since changed.
