CAVI collaborates with the Museum of Ancient Art in planning a 3D projection on Etruscan coffin

This spring, CAVI will display an Etruscan Coffin at the Museum of Ancient Art, Aarhus University, using advanced 3D projection. In the video below, you can catch a glimpse of this collaboration.

As the Etruscan coffin was originally colorful, we are recreating this with a digital layer.

The Museum of Ancient Art (Antikmuseet) at Aarhus University houses a collection of plaster casts and original objects from the Mediterranean region, covering the period from the Bronze Age to the Roman imperial era. This spring, the museum will stage an Etruscan exhibition, and CAVI will contribute with the presentation of an original Etruscan coffin from Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The video below, presented by the Museum of Ancient Art, includes a short teaser of the collaboration between CAVI and the museum. Unfortunately for our foreign readers, the video is in Danish, but it presents our process of advanced 3D projection.

About 11:38 minutes into the documentary, a feature from CAVI’s experimental lab shows how we are currently experimenting with the various visualization options of 3D projection mapping. By scanning the real Etruscan coffin, a virtual 3D model was made, thereby making it possible to work on different virtual visualizations that are projected onto the real coffin. We investigate how the digital layer supports the presentation of the Etruscan coffin. As the video mentions, we are working with colored light, to facilitate a physical and affective experience of how the realm of the dead was understood by the Etruscans.
