Projected Play No. 1 is a tangible 3D tabletop installation developed for LEGO World 2013, for some years an annually recurring four-day event that was held in Bella Center, Copenhagen, where more than 40,000 children and adults went to play with physical LEGO bricks and digital LEGO.
Projected Play was initiated from four design principles:
1. Support walk up and use
2. Encourage exploration
3. Support both individual and group play
4. Enable emergent use
Based on these four principles, Projected Play was designed with simple interactions and projected content.
The installation featured two types of tangible objects: Cubes and stylized Buildings. Along the edge of the table, a series of colored circles provided interaction points. When first placed on the table, all tangibles appeared white. Cubes constantly emitted virtual bricks onto the surface. Moving a cube into one of the colored circles, changed the color of the cube, and the bricks it sprayed matched the new hue. When two colored cubes approached each other, they flickered and swapped colors. Bringing a cube near a building applied a layer of bricks in the cube’s color, allowing users to paint buildings with multiple layers. Once a building was fully colored from bottom to top, it triggered a bright flash, scattering surrounding virtual bricks in an explosive effect - see video below.
Projected Play No. 2 was further investigations into playfull content with projection mapping using LEGO bricks as both virtual and physical, tangible elements.
