PhoneBox

2022

PhoneBox is an interactive urban installation developed by CAVI in collaboration with the City of Aarhus’ innovation project Lys på Aarhus. Located at Telefontorvet in the heart of Aarhus, the installation transforms the public square into a welcoming, social space that invites people to pause, sit down, and connect.

The installation consists of a series of 22 white, cube-shaped elements raised from the square and arranged like a subtle spine through the space. By day, the cubes function as informal seating; by night, they come alive with gently shifting light and sound. Calm, harmonious colors flow across the cubes, accompanied by poetic soundscapes that change in response to how and where people sit or stand.

Each cube is made from Kerrock, a durable material composed of acrylic and aluminum composite. Pressure sensors embedded in the base of the cubes register when someone sits down. Custom control software designed and developed by CAVI translates these interactions into dynamic connections of light and sound that move between the cubes, linking users together—whether they are friends, acquaintances, or complete strangers.

Telecommunication is the central theme of PhoneBox. The installation pays homage to the history of Telefontorvet, which previously housed the regional telephone exchange. Through its interactive use of light and sound, PhoneBox reinterprets this legacy, turning the square into a contemporary meeting place where human presence and interaction create a shared audiovisual experience.
