CityShaper presents a future scenario in which citizen participation plays a central role in the development of public urban spaces. As cities evolve and public areas are transformed, a wide range of perspectives must be heard. While urban planners bring extensive experience and deep knowledge of city dynamics and infrastructure, CityShaper emphasizes openness toward incorporating ideas and proposals from citizens.
By giving residents a voice and real influence on the shaping of their city, CityShaper fosters a sense of ownership and engagement. At the same time, it offers citizens insight into the challenges municipalities face, including economic constraints and practical possibilities.
CityShaper demonstrates how modern technology can enhance citizen involvement in urban development. Solutions already exist where citizens, using mobile devices, can scan QR codes to view upcoming changes in the urban environment through augmented reality. However, these experiences are typically designed for individual users, limited to viewing a digital overlay on a personal screen.
With CityShaper, we envision a collaborative approach where citizens use interconnected handheld devices to co-create urban spaces together. In addition, advanced XR technologies—such as Apple Vision Pro—enable immersive and dynamic shared experiences, transforming how people engage with, discuss, and shape the future of their city.
The demo case have been developed based on research and experiences gained through the SHAPE project in 2025. Throughout the project, insights into citizen participation, technological applications, and collaborative urban development processes were collected and have informed the creation of the demo cases. This case serve as a concrete example of how knowledge and learnings can be translated into practical applications for future urban development scenarios.
