Opening of “Rejsen til Dødsriget” at the Museum of Ancient Art

Beginning 14 April 2014, CAVI will display an Etruscan Coffin at the Museum of Ancient Art, Aarhus University, incorporating advanced 3D projection. The installation will be part of a larger exhibition focusing on the Etruscan traditions of the transition from the land of the living to the land of the dead.

The 3D projection on the Etruscan coffin may now be viewed at the Museum of Ancient Art

Rejsen til Dødsriget (“The Journey to the Underworld”) is CAVI’s latest project using advanced 3D projection on physical objects. Having previously worked on Danish cultural objects as “Runestenen” and “Holger the Dane”, this time the technique is now being applied to the original Etruscan coffin of Arnth Alpna, son of Laris, from Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The project investigates how the digital layer supports the presentation of the Etruscan coffin. By employing colored light and sound, the installation facilitates a physical and affective experience of the way in which the realm of the dead was understood by the Etruscans. As the Etruscan coffin was originally colorful, we have recreated this with a digital layer. Apart from this, the projection presents a staging of the Etruscan emperor in purgatory, as well as the fatal battle and burial of the emperor. Through this staging, we aim to present the Etruscan coffin in an engaging way, presenting the emperor’s story.

The installation is part of a larger Etruscan exhibition focused on the transition from the land of the living to the land of the dead, which will be held at the Museum of Ancient Art, Aarhus University, beginning 14 April.
